Continuous Flow Technology Becomes the "Process Calling Card" of High-End Pharmaceutical Intermediates

2026-09-18

As the ICH Q13 guideline on continuous manufacturing is progressively implemented, the adoption of continuous flow reaction technology in pharmaceutical intermediates has accelerated markedly. Compared with conventional batch reactors, continuous flow relies on microchannel reactors to achieve continuous feeding, precise reaction control and continuous discharge, offering clear advantages in mass and heat transfer efficiency as well as in control of temperature and residence time.

For hazardous or strongly exothermic reactions such as nitration, diazotization and hydrogenation, continuous flow reduces the liquid holdup to a very low level, intrinsically improving safety while suppressing by-product formation and enhancing product purity and batch consistency. Lower solvent consumption and reduced hazardous waste generation also align with increasingly stringent environmental requirements.

Company X has established a dedicated continuous flow process platform and completed end-to-end validation from lab scale through pilot scale to commercial production for several high-end intermediates. The industry views continuous flow capability as an increasingly important technical calling card for leading companies competing for complex custom synthesis orders.
