Low-Salt and Salt-Free Reactive Dyes Gain Market Traction as Water-Saving Retrofits Accelerate

2026-09-11

Reactive dyes are the workhorse for dyeing cellulosic fibers, but conventional processes require large quantities of Glauber's salt as an exhausting agent, resulting in high-salinity effluent that is difficult to treat. As discharge standards continue to tighten, low-salt and salt-free reactive dyes are becoming the preferred choice for dyehouses undertaking technical upgrades.

According to industry sources, the new generation of low-salt reactive dyes features optimized molecular structures that improve substantivity and fixation. At the same shade depth, they can cut exhausting-salt consumption by 30% to 50%, reduce the number of rinsing cycles and water use per ton of fabric, and noticeably lower the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of effluent. For plants assessed on total discharge volume, these water and emission savings translate directly into additional production headroom.

Company X notes that its low-salt reactive dye series has been validated across conventional exhaust dyeing, cold pad-batch and other processes, helping customers cut overall water and salt costs without compromising shade or fastness. The industry expects the share of low-salt and salt-free dyes to grow steadily as cleaner-production upgrades spread across the dyeing sector.
